Digital Maturity in HR: The Surprising Reality

Most HR teams still aren't digitally mature. 77% fall at or below average. Zero reached "Leader" level. That's not a dramatic headline—that's the data.

For the past several months, we've been running our Index by Udder assessment to help HR, Talent, and L&D teams benchmark where they stand across seven key areas—from digital strategy to employee experience. One of those critical areas is digital maturity.

The State of Digital Maturity in HR

When we ask participants to describe their current level of digital maturity within their HR function, the responses paint a clear picture. Respondents can identify as Beginners (no significant digital initiatives underway), Intermediate (some digital projects in place but not fully integrated), Advanced (comprehensive digital integration across HR functions), or Leaders (at the forefront of implementing HR digital innovations).

The results are striking: 27% place themselves at Beginner level, while a full 50% identify as Intermediate. Only 23% consider themselves Advanced, and perhaps most tellingly, not a single respondent—zero percent—selected the Leader category.

What This Reveals About HR Today

This data tells us something important: despite all the industry talk about transformation and innovation, most HR functions are still playing catch-up in the digital realm. More than three-quarters of teams (77%) place themselves at or below average when it comes to digital maturity.

Let's be honest—digital tools are everywhere in today's workplace. But true integration, coherent strategy, and consistent implementation? That's another story entirely. Many HR teams find themselves juggling isolated tools and disconnected processes that don't properly connect, scale effectively, or support long-term organizational goals.

Why Digital Maturity Matters

Digital maturity isn't just about having the latest platforms or technologies. It's fundamentally about how well your HR systems work together to support the business—from hiring to onboarding to retention and every process in between.

Low digital maturity creates real challenges: siloed systems that don't communicate with each other, inefficient manual processes that waste valuable time, frustrated users (both within HR and across the employee base), and significant difficulty adapting to change or scaling initiatives. In essence, digital immaturity places a hard limit on your HR function's potential impact.

Taking Action

The first step toward improvement is getting a clear picture of where you truly stand. That's precisely what the Index by Udder was designed to provide. The assessment takes just a few minutes to complete and delivers a detailed, straightforward report on where your HR function sits across all seven critical areas, including digital maturity, strategy, operations, employee experience, and more.

You'll come away with actionable insights, meaningful benchmarks, and practical steps you can implement immediately—whether you're just beginning your digital journey or looking to advance to the next level.

Moving Forward Together

If you're feeling somewhat called out by this data, remember—you're far from alone. The good news is that no organization has completely cracked the code yet. The even better news? There's a clear path forward, and we're here to help guide you along it.

Take the assessment today and begin your journey toward greater digital maturity in HR.
